About Us

The AlKawthar Community Centre is a charitable, non-profit organization and its activities are carried out without material gain for its members and all accession shall be used in promoting its vision and values.

The AlKawthar Community Centre was established in Calgary, Alberta in October 27, 2003. This was in response to the basic demands of the community for an Islamic Shia centre that would fulfill the needs of the Muslim community as a whole, and in particular the needs of the Muslim children and youth. The children and youth of the community, born and/or raised in Calgary required more attention and resources as they faced various pressures, both social and psychological.  This triggered the need for a centre that will be available for their social and religious needs in order to be knowledgeable of their religion and their faith.

The Shia Community first started hosting their Islamic functions and events at their homes and then at different community halls most known place rented for their activities was Abbeydale Community Centre, located in the North East Area of Calgary.  However, it was important to have a place that will fulfill all the needs of such a growing community. As a result, in May 2011, after many years of work and dedication, and with the support of Sheikh Ali Sbeiti, the community made the purchase of a church which in turn became the main location for the AlKawthar Community Centre to serve the community’s needs and where the community could organize its various activities, functions and educational lectures.

The centre currently serves as a place of worship, social gathering, promoting the teaching and values of Islam according to the Ahlul Bayt School of Thought.
